16 April 2024 – Initial data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker indicates that, in the first quarter of 2024 (1Q24), worldwide shipments of smartphones rose 7.8% year over year to 289.4 million units. The industry is still facing significant challenges due to macroeconomic issues in many areas, but this is the third consecutive quarter of shipment growth, which is a positive sign that the recovery is well on its way.
"After the turmoil of the past two years, the smartphone market is coming out stronger and with new changes," stated Nabila Popal, research director of IDC's Worldwide Tracker team. First off, when consumers choose more expensive products knowing they will keep them for longer, we continue to observe growth in both value and average selling prices (ASPs). Second, there is a power shift among the Top 5 corporations, and this is probably going to continue as market participants modify their approaches in the aftermath of the recovery. After suffering significant losses over the previous two years, Xiaomi is rebounding nicely, and Transsion is establishing a steady presence in the Top 5 because to its aggressive expansion into foreign markets. Samsung appears to be in a better overall position than they were in previous quarters, despite the fact that the Top 2 players both had negative growth in the first quarter."
